Focus on key people and core competencies
Don’t lose the wrong people. If you decide to reduce the number of employees too rapidly without considering your business needs, you could lose key skills and valuable business information. There are lots of issues to consider, but ask yourself:

• Is there a risk that customers may go elsewhere if key members of an account team leave?
• Is the business keeping the right people? Sometimes talented people may question their future with a company if they see budgets being cut, so communication with staff is very important.
• Do you need to recruit people with a different set of skills for you to take advantage of new opportunities?
• Are you still training and developing your staff? This doesn’t have to be attendance on expensive courses: structured training on-the-job can be equally effective.
• Do your managers have the ability to manage change in an unpredictable environment?
• How are you going to continue to reward and recognise your employees? If you have to freeze pay there are still other ways to recognise performance.

Apply creative solutions to your staffing to develop your business. For more help and advice contact Helen Astill at helen@cheringtonhr.com
