Get the basics right
If you need employees to be more efficient and effective, it is a good idea to make sure that you review the current terms and conditions in place. For example:

• Do all employees have written statements of their terms and conditions?
• Are they compliant with current legislation? E.g. new annual leave entitlements and working time regulations.
• Do they have job descriptions and know what is expected of them?
• Do you have published disciplinary and grievance procedures to follow?
• Do you have an employee performance appraisal process? If you do, it will help provide evidence in any situation where there are performance issues which could lead to dismissal.
• Do you have published company rules e.g. in an Employee Handbook?
• Do you keep written records of employee issues?
• Are you managing retirement notifications in line with the age discrimination regulations?

Focusing on getting the basics right can often make managing staff easier as they know what is expected of them. It can provide evidence should you need to take restructuring decisions.
