A CRB check is not enough!
Do you have employees who come into contact with children or vulnerable adults? If so, they are likely to have an enhanced CRB check. But the law is changing. From 12th October 2009, the new Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) will come into being.

From November 2010 all new employees and volunteers who want to work with children or vulnerable adults on a regular basis MUST BE registered with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA.) Employers will be required to check that they are ISA-registered before you can legally take them on.

The responsibility for registering will lie with the employee and there will be a one-off fee of £64 (free to volunteers.) Registration will start in July 2010. The scheme will be phased in for existing employees and is expected that it will normally take about 7 days to register.

Failing to comply with the registration process requirements after November 2010 could result in both the employer and employee or volunteer being prosecuted and even going to prison!

The Government is writing to employers to tell them about the forthcoming changes and their obligations. More information can be found on www.isa-gov.org.uk
